The Library of Virginia has a great site with a lot of old documents from before 1789 -- e.g., land deeds, military commissions, etc. Very useful for researching this family line since it started in Page County (formerly Shenandoah County) Virginia. Also, because much of the family history in Virginia happened before the founding of the US government, the Virginia documents are not housed in the US National Archives. To visit it, go to http://www.lva.virginia.gov/ and click on the Search the LVA Catalog link.
